Chess as a game

It takes only 15 minutes to learn the rules of chess. It is equally enjoyable at beginner, intermediate and advanced levels.

Originally, chess came from 6th-century India. From the ancient board game Chaturanga (Sanskrit: चतुरङ्ग, IAST: caturaṅga, pronounced [tɕɐtuˈɾɐŋɡɐ]), a journey was initiated through Persia and the Arab world to Spain and Italy and the rest of the world.

During the second decade of the 15th century, chess rules changed to make the game more dynamic. The chess queen got the superpowers we enjoy today: being able to move in straight and diagonal lines as far as she wants.

In 2025, chess is likely to be one of the most popular games in the world.

Testimonials

“It's thanks to Chess For All that I got into playing Chess. I found excellent chess teachers there! I felt welcomed into a community of like-minded QBIPOC+ who wanted to learn chess in a non judgmental environment. You got to practice with people of varying skill levels who never made you feel "dumb" about any mistakes you made or any questions you had. I look forward to joining any future chess clubs.”

The Chess for All Workshop / El Ajedrez es para Todes was such a fun experience! The first part was very inspiring, with a short talk about women in chess. The second part was definitely what I loved the most. We were divided into teams, and we played a game of chess under the facilitator’s guidance. What I loved the most was the atmosphere created. I honestly can’t remember if my team won or lost, but I know we had a lot of fun, played as a team, discussed moves, and even helped the other team. At the end, I felt so connected with the other participants, had a great time and also learn something new about chess.
